Chronicle of Ban Ba, by Quynh Ly ( University of Economics – Law HCMC)

We moved upper to the North and straight to the TuyenQuang land having majestic greatness. Far from Ha Noi about 150km, our trip was continuing to Ban Ba Waterfall with a distance of 85km along the small track meandering around the foot of high mountains and green immense fields. Ban Ba Waterfall locates on Phieng Khang Valley, Ha Trung commune, Chiem Hoa district, belong to Ban Ba ecotourism area where have been classified as national famous landscape. Thegreat cascade seemed to remaininherent wild of proteozoic forests including ecosystems and limestone mountains.

We stopped at the foot of a waterfall and heard the melting mountain stream with the sound in successive salvoes..With a rather unique structure, The Ban Ba is a series of continuous operation with a large three-levels waterfall pouringthe white foam down from above vertically with the height of ten of meters. The silver water washed over the gaps, the rocky areas to then also gather to the waterfall foot, forming shallow wells reflecting the blue sky.Sitting on the mound of stones and throw your eyesopening around, you would meet the woods teemed with the same ranges standing in linesin the marvellous way but no less poetic delight. I wondered that has anyone set foot on this land without being attracted by the magical or mysterious sounds of the trees covering wide patches of sky? The viewhere attracts visitors not only by the wild characteristic but also contains hidden beauty of the forests like that people who still remain passions and being completely spellbound by what may be amorously or something just simplynot saying ...or such as kicking away the chaos of life and the daily hustle to find a place of peace for the soul.I suddenly remembered from the beginning legendary from the initial stage, stories aboutthe expansion the territory of country and the songsabout the loving couple's faithfulness which echoing loudly somewhere in the sound of water bucketing against rock sides ...

Leaving the waterfalls, we went back to the House on stilts of Tays, a Vietnamese ethnic minority. One of the unique characteristic in which structure of the Tay’s Houses on stilts is usually having 4 partitions with the columns of houses was buried deep under the ground. The grand stairs is usually placed on the left side of house with odd number of rungs because the concept of Tays, odd numbers are lucky numbers.Today, the architectural style of the House on stilts is becoming widespread and popular in modern cities but there a few of us understand its traditional meaning.I noticed that the House on stilts of Tays generally backs up the mountains, the windows are oriented toward a natural landscape as a convergence or the harmony of heaven and earth. That's because the spiritual concept which is formed in the notion of everyone, whether at any stage or regional matters. It dominates our life in one way or another and in the subconscious, whether wanted or not, regardless of the Tay, Nung, Dao, Thai, Kinh ... all have the same ties which areinvisible.A friend told me that over a next few years, the architectural style of the House on stilts will be gradually replaced by the tile roof modern houses.I wonder if that change is inevitable laws of momentum, and wondering if be happy or sad because it made me think of much about every human life, be changing everyday over the years, not only net physiologically reasons but also in thought and perception, thinking and even emotions, never be completely original so-called.We advocate that just to preserve the sacred values, what are considered the national identity for the offspring generations that must be not forgotten their roots and foot of origin but in each one, the real fact always exists somethingcalled the conflict, which comes from the personal struggle to retain the inherent but in other side, it seems automatically to receive inherently unavoidable imperative. It is a crucial principle for development and should be such happened such like that. But the basic problem here is that transitional period from the old things into valuable new things makes us easy to confuse with the acceptance of the improvements to eliminate backward customs. So what is the humanistic values need to be conserved and what is the need to preserve identity?
